DEEP CUT - RULES

Your submarine has a limited amount of oxygen per travel. At the start of each round, move your oxygen counter down, corresponding to the pressure level. If you run out of oxygen while submerged, you take 2 hull damage per turn still submerged. There are three levels of pressure in the caves.

  • Oxygen - 1
  • Oxygen - 2
  • Oxygen - 3

The caves are old, unstable, fragile and alive, which means there’s a risk of falling debris damaging your submarine while traversing the caverns. This is one of the most common ways of taking damage to your hull. When your hull is destroyed beyond repair, your submarine crumbles and you remove it from the game. On your next turn you can place your submarine at the entrance, but remove all organs from your storage and lower your speed and oxygen storage by one each.

What can you do on your turn?

  • Cave exploration, move your submarine any amount of tiles up to 2x your speed in the current zone.
  • Organ harvest, at an organ growth colony, dig out an organ.

Not all organs can be used to sell on the black market however. Lungs instead regain oxygen in your oxygen tank and Gallbladders allows you to draw a card from the deck of bodily functions.

If you return to the surface at some point in your turn, you’re able to sell them on the black market and exchange them for upgrades to better your submarine.

Bodily functions can be used at any time on your turn. Return on use cards gets returned to the deck after usage, discard on use cards gets removed from the game entirely.

Permanent upgrades however, have to be used as soon as you get them.

When your submarine surfaces, it restores all points in its oxygen tank. Being surfaces is also where you’re able to sell your collected organs on the black market and get upgrades.

What can you buy on the black market?

  • Speed upgrades, allowing you to add one square to movement in all levels.
  • Expanded Oxygen Tank, allowing you to add one point of oxygen to your tank.
  • Quick welding, allowing you to repair a single point of hull damage.

Bronchial Capacity - Oxygen levels

Arterial Speed - Movement speed

Hull Health - Health of your submarine

Cardial Capacity - Place to store harvested organs

The main goal of the game is getting the heart of the cave. As soon as you get your hands on the heart your speed gets halved for as long as you’re carrying the heart. Should you be so unlucky as to exceed your hull damage threshold, you’ll have to remove your submarine as usual, however you’re now out of the game for good. You then remove the heart from your cardial capacity and place it at your submarine's last position. Then, at the start of every turn onward, it moves 5 tiles towards the bottom of the cave. It only stops moving when it is back at its original position or has been grabbed by a player again.
